DEMURRAGE REMINDER
This is to remind you that DEMURRAGE
will be charged on any Geest owned
container equipment which is not returned to the Port and Geest’s custody
within the allowed free time.
Definition of Demurrage.
For
convenience we use the term “Demurrage” to mean both Detention and
Demurrage which is the excess time that a shipping container is retained by
a shipper or consignee, over the number of free days allowed by the shipping
line, before it is returned to the port and the Line’s control.
Rates
and free time vary by Shipping Line and Container/Unit type.
The
purpose of this notice is to bring to your attention that if the container
unit which is in your care and control is not returned to the Port and to
Geest Line’s control within the specified time as stamped on the front of
the respective Bill of Lading, “demurrage” charges will apply and you will
be billed accordingly.
Ways to avoid
demurrage charges being levied.
1. Call this Agency at 429 9688 and
explain the reasons why you will be
unable to return your container on time and give a date that it can be expected
to be returned, bearing in mind that there is no guarantee of a waiver of any
part of the charges likely to be incurred.
2. Retain the Docket given to your company
by the trucking company
that removes the container from your premises as proof of pick-up so that
YOU can claim on them if the unit is not returned to the Port within the
allowed free time as required. Remember it is your responsibility to
ensure that the unit is returned on time.
3. Ensure in good time that your documents
are in order and that your
Custom Broker works immediately to make arrangements have your cargo
inspected and released by Customs and the other Government Regulatory
Agencies so that the process is not delayed in any way.
INSURANCE
Whilst
every effort is made to ensure that customers’ cargo reaches its intended
destination in
perfect condition there are many steps and people involved in making this
happen.
Occasionally when things do go wrong it is difficult to find out where damage
occurred and
who is responsible. As with all shippers, liability is limited by either the
haulier transporting
your goods to the port or by the terms on the bills of lading. These limits are
likely to be less
than the value of the goods concerned.
To
overcome these issues we have teamed up with Centor Insurance and Risk Management
and negotiated an insurance policy with Beazley which will provide cover for
your goods from
the time they are packed and loaded at your address until they are delivered to
you.
